Warship sunk during World War II found after 77 years

9news: Its sinking was part of British attempts to block Italian and German shipping supplying their ground forces in the North Africa campaign.

“The ship broke up rapidly and sank, taking with it the majority of the crew,” the Italian navy said in a statement.

The ship’s remains were discovered 11 nautical miles south of Stromboli, near Sicily. The robot mini submarines – or autonomous underwater vehicles – were launched from a modern-day Italian naval vessel.

Only three weeks after the sinking of the World War II Italian cruiser, HMS Urge was destroyed with the loss of its entire crew. It is believed the British submarine struck a mine off Malta.
