tatler: Following on from the news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to step down as ‘senior’ royals and pursue financial independence, the couple looked set to embark on a number of new ventures.
As far back as June last year, the pair applied for two UK trademarks – for ‘Sussex Royal’ and the title of their new charitable venture, ‘Sussex Royal, the Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ – under which any forthcoming business and philanthropic projects were set to proceed.
‘Queen Meghan’ is exempt from Labour Leadership hopeful Lisa Nandy’s plans to abolish monarchy
However, news has now broken that the Queen has apparently banned the couple from branding themselves as Sussex Royal if they are no longer to be working as part of the Royal Family. The Daily Mail reports that the decision comes after extensive negotiations between Harry and Meghan and the Royal Family as to how they will now present themselves in their independent careers.
Having already launched an elaborate website and amassed a significant Instagram following (of 11.2 million) under the Sussex Royal title, the news outlet states that the couple will no longer be permitted to make use of the title for their website, social media or charitable foundation.
The Duke and Duchess are believed to have spent as much as tens of thousands of pounds on their website, which was reportedly built with the help of an American PR firm. The pair also registered Sussex Royal as a global trademark that would have encompassed ventures and items including books, stationery and clothing.
The decision has reportedly come from the Queen, who, after consultation with senior officials, is thought to have concluded that it would not be appropriate for the couple to continue to use the word ‘royal’ in their branding. The Mail quoted a source as stating, ‘In many ways this is inevitable given their decision to step down, but it must surely come as a blow to the couple as they have invested everything into the Sussex Royal brand. The Queen would have had little choice, however.
‘The Sussexes’ original plan – of being half-in, half-out working royals – was never going to work. Obviously, as the Queen has made clear, they are still much-loved members of her family.’
The Queen’s alleged intervention implies that the monarch is seeking to lay down some boundaries regarding how Meghan and Harry will be permitted to go about their new life if they are no longer to operate as working members of the Royal Family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex speak at glitzy summit for billionaires
Buckingham Palace has yet to officially comment, but The Times quoted a royal source as saying, ‘As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family and will work towards financial independence, use of the word ‘royal’ in this context needed to be reviewed. Discussions are still ongoing.’
The decision could come as quite the setback to Harry and Meghan, who have already put their new careers in motion with the branding in place. The Duke recently spoke at JP Morgan’s Alternative Investment Summit in Miami, and the couple are believed to have discussed their charitable foundation with professors at Stanford University in California last week.
The pair now find themselves in quite the predicament, forced to come up with a new brand name for any upcoming ventures.
