dailymail: Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has confirmed the club’s intentions to secure the long-term futures of stars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
France World Cup winner Mbappe has been linked with moves to Liverpool and Real Madrid, while PSG team-mate Neymar is also the subject of interest from Zinedine Zidane’s men as well as former club Barcelona.
The contracts of both forwards expire in 2022, and therefore the Ligue 1 champions’ hand could be forced next summer if the duo fail to negotiate new terms at the Parc des Princes.
But it is a situation Leonardo is hoping he will not have to consider and has insisted Thomas Tuchel’s are not preparing for life without Mbappe and Neymar.
‘There’s nothing that tells us they’ll leave this summer,’ Leonardo told French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche.
‘They both still have two years left on their contracts and we’re thinking about what we can do next with them. We want to move forward.
‘Mbappe is the future of PSG. This is what everyone wants. The ideal scenario would be for him to extend his contract.
‘He’s already among the best five players in the word. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are 32 and 35, Neymar and Mbappe are 28 and 21 and they are with us.
‘There’s no need to overthink it. We have to take advantage of having them because they’re something huge. We have to find a solution to continue together.’
Leonardo also believes that Brazil star Neymar has put the events of last summer’s transfer window behind him.
The 28-year-old was desperate to join LaLiga giants Barcelona but a summer-long transfer saga failed to bear fruit for the Catalan side and the forward.
‘We’ve not talked about it any more,’ Leonardo continued.
‘He’s been very happy, he’s had a great season and he’s been very involved with the squad.’
Leonardo also confirmed on Saturday that the club will part ways with all-time record goalscorer Edinson Cavani and captain Thiago Silva in the summer upon the expiration of their contracts.
The 50-year-old sporting director also indicated the club will go through ‘a summer of transition without any bling-bling transfers.’
Although the Ligue 1 season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, PSG are set to compete in two domestic cup finals, in which they will face Lyon and Rennies in the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France respectively
The club’s hunt for a maiden Champions League title is also expected to be concluded in August.
