Metro: Paul Pogba has praised Manchester United teammate David de Gea for his stunning save to deny West Ham attacker Michail Antonio in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.
The French midfielder opened the scoring from the spot, though the visitors equalised through Felipe Anderson at the start of the second half and looked likeliest to find a winner late on. Substitute Antonio hit the bar and then saw a goal-bound header miraculously clawed out by De Gea, before Pogba netted a second, game-winning penalty minutes later.
Far from being in awe of De Gea’s reflexes, though, Pogba said such saves have become the norm for a remarkable keeper who he hopes will remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future. ‘David is David. We know about this. This is not something incredible, we’re used to it and hopefully we’re going to keep being used to saves like that,’ Pogba told MUTV.
‘And I told him, “This is normal for you so I don’t congratulate you”. I Just don’t say nothing, it’s normal. ‘Na obviously David is a top class goalkeeper and this save showed it again so we are really lucky that we have him.’
Asked about the save, De Gea explained: ‘Sometimes when they head downwards the headers are very difficult for keepers, you don’t know where the ball is going, so you have to react quickly.
I just help the team, I made a save, and we won the game. ‘[Antonio] was very good last 15 minutes, he created a lot of danger, he hit the bar and after I made the save in the right moment, we were still 1-1, and after we got the penalty and won the game. We are happy but at the same time need to improve a lot.’
