Manchester United have told AS Roma that they are interested in a deal to sign Kostas Manolas, according to reports in the Italian media.
Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, as quoted by the Daily Express, is reporting that the Red Devils have “already expressed a clear interest” in signing the 27-year-old defender.
The same story claims that Manchester United’s hopes of being able to sign Manolas are also boosted by the fact that he has a £32.4m (€36m) release clause in his contract.
The article says that AS Roma would be “powerless” to reject an offer for Manolas from Manchester United in January should the Red Devils trigger the clause.
However, the same report says that AS Roma have made it clear that they want to keep hold of Manolas until the end of the season at the least as they target Champions League qualification.
The Greece international has been in solid form for Roma this season and has scored one goal and made one assist in 16 Serie A games for the Italian side.
Manchester United are likely to be linked with a number of players over the coming days as the Red Devils ponder bolstering Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad in the mid-season transfer window.
The Red Devils are currently sixth in the Premier League and they will return to Premier League action on Wednesday night with a trip to Newcastle United.
