everythingbarca: Lionel Messi has boiled down on one Barcelona player for the club’s latest mishap against Liverpool in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona will have to wait to lift the UEFA Champions League for at least one year after their latest setback in the competition. The Catalans threw away a 3-0 lead from the first leg at the Anfield against Liverpool last Wednesday and extended their barren run on the European front for a fourth successive year.
Inevitably, Ernesto Valverde has started to feel insecure about his job and it would be unsurprising to see him sacked in case the Catalans don’t end up winning the Copa del Rey. With that being said, the former Athletic Bilbao manager apparently already has a successor in Barcelona legend Ronald Koeman.
However, Lionel Messi has felt that Barcelona’s biggest failure over the two legs was not their manager, but ex-Liverpool winger Philippe Coutinho, as per the Fox Sports. The 26-year-old has had the Argentina captain’s backing in spite of his constant failures in the Camp Nou, but it looks like even Messi has run out of forbearance for the Brazilian.
Philippe Coutinho barely featured in an hour in each leg and was eventually substituted. Probably, Barcelona would have been better off with playing Ousmane Dembele on the left flank and despite featuring less, the France international is also on the blacklist made by Lionel Messi over the last week.
But the facts that Ousmane Dembele is just 21, doing better than Philippe Coutinho and has a lot of room for improvement have kept him from suffering the blunt of the Barca management. Meanwhile, the Catalans are looking to sell off Coutinho in the summer transfer window and will save on 20 million euros in doing so as the player has not yet made 100 appearances for the club.
As per the sign-on clause, Liverpool would receive that amount once Coutinho plays a certain number of games for the club.
