express: Jose Mourinho has been warned that he has no chance of returning to top-tier club in Europe after leaving Manchester United, because all he cares about is money.

That’s according to Liverpool legend Steve Nicol – who thinks Mourinho will either go to the Middle East or the Far East.

Mourinho has claimed that he had been presented with three or four offers from clubs in the wake of his Old Trafford dismissal last December.

The 56-year-old was also linked with a Real Madrid recently, but Los Blancos turned to another former manager in Zinedine Zidane instead.

Mourinho recently added that he wants to be back in management by the summer so that he can have time in pre-season and in the transfer market to build a team.

But according to Nicol, Mourinho is running out of options, and could find himself managing in the Chinese Super League or in Saudi Arabia rather than the Premier League or La Liga.

The ESPN pundit declared that Mourinho is too driven by how much money he will be given to spend, and that is a big reason that teams will decide against hiring him.

“I think when you’re looking for a manager he’s still one of the main guys,” he admitted.

“Maybe not right at the top where he used to be, but he’s still someone you’d be interested in.

“I would assume [he would go to] the likes of Saudi Arabia or China, because he’s not coming cheap.”

Asked if Mourinho will return to one of Europe’s top five leagues, Nicol added: “I don’t think so, I don’t see that at all. He wants money.”

Nicol was adamant that none of the driving forces in European football would touch the Portuguese after his failure at Old Trafford.

“[Where can he go] At the highest level? Nowhere. He’s not going to Barcelona, he’s not going back to Manchester United, he’s not going to PSG I believe,” he continued.

“He’s talking about how he wants a title, but in recent years that’s [money] been all he’s talked about.

“He’s said all this about how he wants defenders, he’s not got enough money, this is a guy who was considered a fantastic coach.

“It seems like he’s forgotten that to win titles, you have to be a good coach as well as have money.”

Mourinho was dismissed by United after a string of disappointing results, matched with dire performances.

His team was constantly criticised for having a negative style of play, and for ‘parking the bus’ in big games.

During his time in Manchester he won the Carabao Cup, the Community Shield and the Europa League.
