Metro: Ed Sheeran is officially king of the charts after being named the UK’s number one artist of the decade and, let’s face it, is anyone even shocked?
The Thinking Out Loud singer has completely dominated the charts since 2011 with the release of his debut album and single, and it’s been an uphill success story since.
In celebration of his achievements, the Official Charts Company have crowned him the UK’s official number one artist of the decade while also honouring him with the official chart record breaker award.
Ed, 28, has earned the most number ones across the official singles and albums chart between 2010 and 2019 with 12 number ones.
The crooner has also spent the most weeks at number one across the official singles and albums charts with a staggering 79 weeks at the top.
After finding out the exciting news, Ed said: ‘Thank you to everyone who’s supported me over the past 10 years, especially my amazing fans. Here’s to the next 10!’ Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company, added: ‘Ed truly has dominated this decade and is a worthy recipient of this amazing new award.
‘At the start of the decade, he was a little known (albeit highly rated) young 18-year-old lad from Suffolk – but his catalogue of achievements since then are genuinely remarkable. ‘Today, he is firmly established among the highest level of global music superstars.’ Ed’s 2017 single Shape Of You is the official biggest song of the decade after spending 14 weeks at number one and amassing over 4.5 million chart sales.
The eye-watering numbers don’t stop there either as Ed’s songs have been streamed 4.6 billion times in the UK alone.
When it comes to the charts overall, there’s no other act who has scored more top fives, top 10s or top 20 hits this decade, or spent longer in the Official Chart Top 40 during that period than Ed’s mind-blowing 572-week residency.
Ed made history in March 2017 when all 16 tracks from his third album Divide propelled into the top 20 singles chart in the same week. The critically-acclaimed album is the fastest-selling album by a male solo artist of all time after shifting 672,000 copies in its opening week.
Shape Of You isn’t the only Ed song in the top 10 tracks of the decade, as Thinking Out Loud sits at number three, while Perfect is at number five. Elsewhere, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk is the second biggest song of the decade, while Luis Fonsi’s Despacito, which was only released in 2017.
Drake’s One Dance sits at number six, Pharrell Williams’ Happy is at number seven, John Legend’s All Of Me comes in at number eight, Justin Bieber’s Sorry sits at number nine, and Clean Bandit’s Rather Be rounds off the top 10.
