express: Christiano Ronaldo and his Real Madrid team-mates were scared to face Lyon in the Champions League when Jose Mourinho took over.

Christiano Ronaldo and Mourinho spent three years at Real Madrid together and had mixed success, claiming the Copa del Rey and La Liga titles.

However, they failed to win the Champions League with Los Blancos always falling agonisingly short.

Mourinho, despite working for Barcelona in the past, was brought in to win Europe’s top club competition after claiming the prize with Inter Milan.

Real had gone eight years without lifting the trophy at the time.

And Lyon were their scourge, beating them in matches in 2007 and 2009.

As a result, Mourinho has now revealed that he believed Ronaldo and his Real Madrid team-mates to be SCARED of facing the Ligue 1 outfit.

“I think that for seven or eight years they hadn’t reached the quarter-finals. They didn’t play in semi-finals or quarter-finals,” he told beIN Sports.

“In my first season we had Lyon and the club was afraid.

“I couldn’t understand how a club could be afraid of Lyon, who were a good team, but it was Lyon.”

Mourinho guided Real to three consecutive Champions League semi-finals during his time in charge. In 2011, they were beaten 3-1 by fierce rivals Barcelona

The following year, it was Bayern Munich who broke their hearts, winning via a penalty shootout.

And, in Mourinho’s final season, the La Liga giants were beaten by Borussia Dortmund.

Real have enjoyed more success in the years since Mourinho’s exit, however.

They beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the 2014 final with Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo all on target.

They needed penalties to beat the same opposition two years later.

In 2017, Juventus were beaten 4-2 in an enthralling final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. And, just last year, they put Liverpool to the sword in a 3-1 victory in Kiev.
