everythingbarca: One of Barcelona’s major targets has decided to opt for a move to Spain’s capital half- where Real Madrid are ready to pounce as well.
Barcelona are keen on signing a central defender this summer and their interest has been invested in Ajax Amsterdam superstar Matthijs de Ligt since the past few months. The 19-year-old had been tipped to follow his compatriot and club teammate Frenkie de Jong to the Camp Nou, but suddenly, things have stagnated and de Ligt may not be a Blaugrana after all.
Josep Maria Bartomeu’s recent sprees on Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele and most recently, Frenkie de Jong, have put him in a financially tight position. Thus, the Catalans cannot afford to pay the asking price of 80 million euros for de Ligt this summer nor are they able to pay for his high wage and Mino Raiola’s agent fees.
Lionel Messi was keen on seeing Matthijs de Ligt at Barcelona given the way he has taken to football and most particularly, the Champions League, at such a young age. But according to a claim made by Diario GOL, Matthijs de Ligt is unhappy with what the Spanish champions are offering to him and will head to Real Madrid if the Whites satisfy his demands.
Zinedine Zidane’s side has already recruited Eder Militao this summer, but with Sergio Ramos ageing and Raphael Varane requiring a long-term partner in the centre of defence it would not be surprising if the Merengues spend lavishly on de Ligt. They have already proven their credentials by signing Militao, Jovic, Hazard, Rodrygo and Mendy over the summer.
Currently, Matthijs de Ligt’s stock in the transfer market is tremendously high and he is also on the radars of Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. What’s worse for his suitors is that his bargaining power is high because of the number of teams interested him, and more so, because of the Middle-East funded sides Man City and PSG.
