Barcelona Fans Rain Down Insults to Lionel Messi at the Airport

metro: A group of devastated Barcelona supporters hurled abuse at Lionel Messi as he arrived at John Lennon Airport following the side’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Liverpool.

Liverpool completed one of the competition’s greatest ever comebacks as braces from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum sent Jurgen Klopp’s side into the final for a second successive season. Messi was at his frightening best as he inspired Barcelona to a 3-0 lead at the Nou Camp, but the iconic forward was unable to get a hold of the second leg and broke down in tears after referee Cuneyt Cakir blew the full-time whistle.

To make matters worse for Messi, he was required to undergo a doping test immediately after the defeat and Barca’s team bus departed Anfield without him on board.

When Messi finally did make it to the airport after providing a urine sample, he was confronted by a number of Barcelona fans who piled yet more misery on the Argentine. According to El Chiringuito TV, one supporter yelled: ‘Messi you are the captain! You are the one in charge!’ ‘Only [Marc-Andre] Ter Stegen. All year, all f***ing year, only Ter Stegen!’

Mundo Deportivo claims that Messi was subjected to booing and criticism while he made his way through the airport. Pepe Costa, the director of Barcelona’s player department, was also involved in a clash with angry supporters before the situation cooled. The report adds that a separate group of Barcelona fans showed support for Messi and applauded him as he walked away.

Luis Suarez claimed Barcelona played like a ‘youth team’ after they managed to throw away a three-goal first-leg cushion for the second season on the bounce. ‘We are very sad, very hurt,’ the Uruguayan said after the match. ‘It’s time to do a lot of self-criticism in our team, it is the second time that this has happened.

‘We cannot commit the same mistake two years in a row, we have to think about many things and must be ourselves, tell us things in the face, things that we’ve done wrong. ‘It’s not possible that in one minute we concede two goals. Their fourth goal? We looked like a youth team there. ‘The coach does not have to be reproached, we are the ones who have to ask for forgiveness.’
