dailymail: France Football have published a list of reasons why Neymar has been left off their shortlist for the Ballon d’Or.
There was a shock when the Brazilian was left off the list of nominees for the individual player award on Monday night, which was the first time that has occurred after eight straight years of being included.
But France Football, the outlet that runs the award, has now justified why they have not included the Paris Saint-Germain man.
They go as far back as January 23, when Neymar was playing against Strasbourg.
In that game, he picked up his first injury of the calendar year, to his metatarsal, and therefore missed out on PSG against Manchester United in the Champions League.
Then they go into the fact that after losing that game, he insulted the officials for their decision making and picked up a two-game ban in European competition as a result.
Damningly, France Football then point out the ban has been ‘without consequence, since his teammates have imposed themselves each time’.
France Football then point out the time he pushed a fan for insulting him after the Coupe de France final on April 27 that PSG lost.
Neymar’s absence from the Copa America, which was held in Brazil, due to injury is also flagged up as a problem.
There is also a significant focus on the ‘soap opera of the summer’, his failed transfer to Barcelona.
Given how clear it was that Neymar wanted to move on to the Spanish club, there is a sense that he has still not been forgiven in France for the transfer drama.
Finally, they add that he has picked up another injury and will therefore miss Le Classic against Marseille and the Champions League clash with Brugge.
The 30-man shortlist for the prestigious award certainly got the football world talking following its release on Monday.
European champions Liverpool have seven players in contention for the honour, including Virgil van Dijk who has been tipped among bookmakers as the favourite.
Should he take the prestigious accolade, which was won last year by Luka Modric, the Dutchman would become the first defender to win since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are both going for a sixth Ballon d’Or title. Rightly heralded as the world’s best players for the past decade, the duo will once again go head to head this year.
Neymar is yet to release any form of personal response following his snub from the decorated list of names.
