Anthony Martial Has Been Crowned As The Manchester United Player of The Season

forbes: When AS Monaco sold Anthony Martial to Manchester United in the summer of 2015 they insisted on a clause that would see them earn another £7.2 million if the player went on to win the Ballon d’Or in the next four years.

In those years Martial didn’t come close to helping his former club earn this extra money as his form swung between moments of genius and despair.

But this season, and especially since the restart, Martial has emerged as a player who soon looks capable of competing for football’s highest individual award.

It suddenly doesn’t seem so far-fetched with Martial displaying his glorious natural talent over the last six weeks with a flurry of goals and assists that have helped drive United to a third-placed finish and a return to the Champions League.

In the mean time he will have to be content with being recognised as Manchester United’s best player from this disjointed 2019-20 season.

Before the restart, it was Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fred who were best placed to take the accolade, but since football’s return Martial has overtaken them, and become the emblem of United’s transformation in to a more exciting side.

The Frenchman finished the season as United’s joint leading scorer with Marcus Rashford in both the Premier League where he scored 17 goals and in all competitions where he has a total of 22 goals.

In the seven years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, this was the first time a United player had scored 17 non-penalty goals in a Premier League season.

Martial had enjoyed a good season before the coronavirus outbreak, but clearly appeared to be energised by his time in lockdown and returned to score 6 goals in 9 Premier League games to recharge United’s season.

There was the sublime hat-trick in the 3-0 win against Sheffield United, the first by a United player in the Premier League since Robin van Persie in 2013, a wonderful strike in the 5-2 win over Bournemouth, and crucial goals against Southampton and Crystal Palace.

On that nervous final day of the season when United needed at least a point against Leicester City to secure Champions League football, it was Martial who won the crucial penalty with his surging run through the middle of their defence.

This has not been a simple matter of becoming a goal poacher, but rather how Martial has combined up front with Rashford and Mason Greenwood to form a dynamic and exciting front three.

Suddenly, with Martial orchestrating attacks United became box office and were an enthralling team to watch once more.

After arriving for an initial £36 million in the summer of 2015 Martial enjoyed a promising debut season by scoring 17 goals in all competitions

But in the following three seasons, his goal output would drop to 8, 11 and 12 in all competitions as he struggled with both his confidence and form.

At times, he didn’t help himself with an on-pitch demeanour that could look as though he wasn’t interested.

He had to watch as first Zlatan Ibrahimovic and then Romelu Lukaku arrived to snatch away his central striker role, with Ibrahimovic even taking his number nine shirt as well.

Shunted to the wing, the then United manager Jose Mourinho never truly believed in Martial, and became determined to sell him in the summer of 2018.

The club refused to bend to their manager’s will, which has been entirely vindicated in the eighteen months since Mourinho’s sacking.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Martial has found a manager who believes in him and even gave him back the number nine shirt.

The Frenchman has recalled how one of Solskjaer’s first acts as United manager was to ask if he wanted his number back. “I straight up said yes! He told me: ‘Now it’s up to you to show me you deserve it every time you’re on the pitch’.”

Martial has kept his side of the deal, and this season become the player United always hoped he would; quick, direct and with a rare composure in front of goal; he has regularly provided jump-out-of your seat moments for fans banished to their sofas.

In a suddenly competitive field, Martial deserves to now be recognised as Manchester United’s best player this season.
